Somatics refers to healing practices that are body-oriented. (The word “soma,” means body.) Somatics is considered to be a holistic type of psychotherapy, but has has roots in movement, dance, massage therapy, and mindfulness. Somatic therapies attempt to heal the split between body and mind, empowering individuals to utilize their body as a resource in healing. What does this look like in therapy? Most frequently, I encourage moment-by-moment awareness of the feelings that are within the body. If clients are comfortable with the idea, we can use breathwork or even movement.
In our western medical model, disease in the body is treated as separate from disease in the mind.  Somatic therapy seeks to heal this split, recognizing that we are each complex whole beings who sometimes experience dis-ease in body, mind, and spirit, necessitating healing on all levels.
